Almansa Photo Gallery
Almansa is situated at a frontier between several medieval kingdoms and was therefore an important border castle to the SW of Valencia. During the Reconquest this area was also a frontier between Christian kingdoms of Castile and Aragon and the Muslim kingdom of Murcia. Built by the Almohad dynasty in the early12th century quite a few remains of this original building survive in the present structure.
However, the majority of the castle as it appears today is of Christian construction and dates from the mid 13th to 15th century.
The castle of Almansa dominates the town laid out below the rocky outcrop on which it was built and is visible for miles around. For a more detailed look at the castle of Almansa follow this link.
