Within the modern region of Alicante, the castle of Villena has a long history. Founded in Roman times the castle has been successively occupied and rebuilt into the 16th century. The impressive castle we see today dominates the town and surrounding landscape. Dating from the 15th century the impressive bartizans, towers and walls are a magnificent sight.

In the lower section of the 15th century keep is preserved rare and original vaulted rooms of the Islamic period. These vaults are finished with ribs creating patterns familiar in Islamic art and architecture and reveal the high status of this castle when in muslim hands during the 12/13th centuries. These ribbed vaults seem to be confined to this area of Spain and only occur in one or two other castles of the area.

The wall paintings, recently revealed during restoration of the upper floors of the keep, are original and perhaps of 15th century date.
