January 2012

A new site wide page header has been added as a minor cosmetic change. I hope the new image is brighter, more welcoming and implies 'Spanish Castles' better than the old one.

A clickable photomap has been added to show locations of photo galleries of Spanish castles. Click here to take you to the map page.

A new article discussing the frequent appearance of Roman period stone and masonry in Islamic castles in Spain. Was there a deeper meaning or were they simply making use of existing material?. Go to the article here.

There is an in-depth article, with pictures, of Jimena de la Frontera castle in Cadiz province here.

Finally this month I have added a new Photo Gallery of the very interesting castle of Jimena de la Frontera to add further illustrations to the in-depth article of the same castle.

A new article on the origins of those unique features of Spanish castles, the detached towers (Torre Albarrana) has been added to the site. This article is republished here after first appearing in a castle magazine. New photographs have been added to the web page illustrating albarrana towers in Iberia as well as other defensive towers from elsewhere. Go directly to the article here.

Three new photo galleries have been added this month for the castles of Jumilla in the Murcia region, Trujillo in Extremadura and Niebla in Andalusia. They can all be found from the links on the Photo Gallery main page.

November 2010

The site has undergone a complete refresh this month. I have migrated the site from an iWeb template to Dreamweaver in an attempt to make the site simpler and less cluttered and easier to navigate. I have taken the opportunity to update parts of the text and to replace some photographs.
